Biography of Bishop David Oyedepo

Introduction:

David Olaniyi Oyedepo, a prominent Nigerian preacher, Christian author, businessman, and architect, has left an indelible mark on the landscape of Christianity in Africa. Born on September 27, 1954, Oyedepo is renowned as the founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, widely known as Winners Chapel, and the presiding Bishop of the Faith Tabernacle in Ota, Ogun State.

The Winners Chapel International network, an extension of Oyedepo's vision, spans numerous states in Nigeria and has a global presence with congregations in various countries. As one of the forerunners of the Christian charismatic movement in Africa, Bishop Oyedepo is esteemed for his compelling oratory skills and impactful messages.

In addition to his role in the ministry, Bishop Oyedepo serves as the chancellor of both Covenant University and Landmark University. These educational institutions, established with a commitment to excellence, reflect Oyedepo's dedication to providing quality education aligned with Christian principles.

Notably, in 2011, Forbes magazine recognized Bishop Oyedepo as the richest pastor in Nigeria, acknowledging not just his spiritual leadership but also his success as a businessman. This recognition is a testament to the multifaceted nature of Oyedepo's contributions, encompassing religious leadership, education, and entrepreneurship. The church allegedly owns four private jets and several structures, including ones in the US and London. To prepare the youth for a worldwide impact, Covenant University, Faith Academy, and Kingdom Heritage Model Schools have been formed under Oyedepo. A third institution, to be called Crown University, is currently being built in Calabar, Cross River, Nigeria.

Bishop David Oyedepo's influence extends beyond the pulpit, as he continues to impact lives through his teachings, writings, and entrepreneurial endeavors. His commitment to promoting both spiritual and economic well-being has made him a revered figure not only within the Christian community but also in the broader societal context.

Background & Personal Life

David Olaniyi Oyedepo was born on September 27, 1954, in Osogbo, Nigeria. Hailing from Omu-Aran in Kwara State, he grew up in a household influenced by both Islam and Christianity. His father, Ibrahim, was a Muslim healer, and his mother, Dorcas, followed the Aladura movement, specifically the Holy Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church (C&S). Raised in Osogbo, his grandmother played a pivotal role in instilling Christian principles, including early morning prayers and the significance of tithing.

Oyedepo pursued architectural studies at the Ilorin campus of the Kwara State Polytechnic. His educational journey extended to obtaining a Ph.D. in Human Development from Honolulu University in Hawaii. In 1982, Oyedepo married Florence Abiola Akano, now known as Faith Oyedepo. The couple has four children: David Jr., Isaac, Love, and Joyce. Notably, in May 2007, Kenneth Copeland anointed Isaac and David Oyedepo Jr. as pastors. Isaac Oyedepo leads Winners’ Chapel International in Maryland, USA, with his wife Ayomitide, while David Oyedepo Jr. formerly served as the resident pastor of Faith Tabernacle with his wife Kemi. Love, the first child, is married to Stephen Ogah, also a pastor at Winners’ Chapel, and Joyce Priscilla, the second daughter, married Abimbola Abodunrin in 2020.

Journey Into Ministry

Oyedepo's journey into ministry began with a spiritual transformation in 1969, influenced by his teacher, Betty Lasher. In May 1981, he claimed a divine mandate through an 18-hour vision to free the world from demonic oppression, leading to the establishment of Liberation Faith Hour Ministries, later evolving into Living Faith Church Worldwide (LFCWW). Ordained by Pastor Enoch Adeboye in 1983, Oyedepo became a bishop five years later under the mentorship of Archbishop Benson Idahosa.

Living Faith Church, initially in Kaduna, relocated to Lagos in 1989 following divine orders. Oyedepo's commitment to his vision resulted in the construction of Canaanland in 1998, a 530-acre estate housing the church's headquarters and the Guinness Book of Records-listed Faith Tabernacle, a 50,000-seat auditorium dedicated in 1999.

Canaanland has since expanded to a 5,000-acre estate, accommodating various facilities, including Covenant University, schools, businesses, and housing for employees. Oyedepo's ministry also includes the annual Shiloh meeting, held in Faith Tabernacle, and the ongoing construction of "The Ark," an amphitheatre with 100,000 seats.

Aligned with the Word of Faith Movement, Oyedepo considers influential figures like Kenneth Copeland, Gloria Copeland, Kenneth Hagin, and others as mentors. His teachings are associated with the prosperity gospel. Winners' Chapel International operates the Word of Faith Bible Institute, contributing to leadership development and Christian values awareness.

Under David Oyedepo Ministries International (DOMI), Oyedepo oversees Living Faith Church worldwide, Covenant University, Landmark University, and social development missions, including hospitals and schools. His multifaceted ministry reflects a commitment to faith, education, and societal development, leaving a significant impact globally.
