Come Back Home
Anchor Scripture:
But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst [John 4:14]
In the poignant scenes of movies or plays, have you ever witnessed the heartfelt plea of a parent desperately urging their child, "Come back home"? This narrative often unfolds with the child, convinced of their independence, believing they can thrive without parental guidance, opting to remain distant where rules seem less restrictive.
Now, let's redirect our focus to real-life dynamics. Sin, as we discover, fractures our connection with God. Each transgression creates a rupture between our spirit and the divine source, akin to our soul being severed from its life-sustaining origin. The grim reality of being a sinner isn't just the transgressions themselves; it's living with a perpetual homesickness.
Perpetual homesickness, a term you might be unfamiliar with, encapsulates the soul's relentless quest for fulfillment outside God's embrace. Designed to worship and commune with God, our soul, when estranged, seeks substitutes, yearning for satisfaction in various pursuits. Yet, crucially, true contentment eludes us unless found in Christ.
Our soul's authentic home is God. Regardless of our attempts to replace Him—be it with past experiences, relationships, material pursuits, or fleeting pleasures—we endure perpetual homesickness. Moments of happiness may surface, but an unfillable void persists until we return to God.
Perhaps you resonate with this struggle. Let's cease tormenting ourselves with transient substitutes that barely quench a quarter of our spiritual thirst. Embrace Jesus, as in John 4:14: "But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst..." If you've yet to know God intimately, consider: Isn't it time to come back home?
Prodigal son or daughter, your Father awaits you earnestly, yearning for your return.
Prayer: Abba Father, Jehovah, I acknowledge that I was crafted for Your indwelling presence. My inner being longs for You. Come, dwell in me, righteous Spirit.
