The Power of Habit: Know Your Weakness
Anchor Scripture:
Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. (Matthew 26:41).
No one wakes up in the morning thinking, "I'm going to be a liar today."
- No one aspires to be lazy or unproductive.
- No one plans to become a drug addict or an alcoholic.
- Teens and youth don't aspire to be porn addicts.
Yet, it happens daily to many, including believers. Even the most dedicated individuals, morally grounded students, and Christians falter and succumb to temptation and sin.
Consider Peter, the fisherman, as a biblical example. He never dreamt of denying Jesus. He even took an oath, confident he would never do such a thing. Yet, within hours, Peter found himself vehemently denying his association with Jesus.
What happened? The verse captures it: "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." Peter's spirit was willing, but fear gripped his flesh, creating a barrier.
- We intend to wake early but end up waking late.
- We strive to love our enemies but find ourselves harbouring hatred.
- We aim to be fervently devoted to God, yet curiosity about worldly things persists.
There's always a "BUT," and that "BUT" is the flesh. It's weak yet powerful, controlling the spirit if not subdued. Our spirit is willing, but our flesh is weak. The weakness of our human nature stems from SIN. Since the fall of Adam and Eve, our nature has leaned toward sin, rendering our flesh susceptible to various temptations.
As believers, our sinful nature remains a formidable force to contend with, and without caution, we can stumble.
How do we address this inherent weakness? We can't escape our bodies, so what do we do?
To deal with this weakness, we need Spiritual Disciplines:
1. The Word of God:
The Word has the power to rebuke, train, correct, cleanse, and encourage. We must consume, digest, and meditate on it to fortify our body, soul, and spirit.
2. Prayer:
Communication with our Heavenly Father is essential. We must daily lay our weaknesses before Him, seeking strength and direction. He knows us better than anyone else.
3. Christian Friends (Accountability Partners):
Surrounding ourselves with Christian friends helps us stay on the right path. They play a crucial role in redirecting us when we veer off course.
4. Fasting: Fasting is a powerful discipline that helps subdue the desires of the flesh. It involves abstaining from food or other specific activities for a set period, focusing on spiritual growth, and seeking God's strength.
5. Meditation:
Taking time to reflect on God's Word and His promises can renew our minds. Meditating on scriptures helps align our thoughts with God's truth, providing a defence against the deceptive allure of sin.Incorporating these additional practices into our spiritual journey can contribute to overcoming the weakness of the flesh and fostering spiritual growth. Each discipline plays a unique role in building resilience and fortifying our commitment to living in alignment with God's Word
Prayer: Abba Father, grant me the grace to turn to You for strength, direction, and the ability to overcome temptations.
